I just got home from a very interesting staff get together. We decided to go downtown, with a lady who we know from the pet store. We often give her ripped bags of pet food, food past its best before dates, dented cans….basically anything we cannot sell. She in turn, takes it downtown and hands it out to the homeless.
Tonight we went with her and handed out food, treats and supplies. We offered some advice for pet parents, clipped nails and cleaned ears. We also handed out warm meals and snacks; all left overs from a catering company. We served rice and potatoes, salmon and chicken, burgers and hot dogs. It was an amazing two hours of non stop action. Every one was polite. Every one waited their turn. Every one was thankful. There were people of all ages. Young, old. It was an assortment of people with stories, people who were grateful for every little thing. I was met with smiles and words of thanks. All genuine. We were asked many times which organization were with, and when we responded with “None, we’re just people helping people”, their reactions made it all worth it.
We are planning on doing this more regularly. Every two months. Because the world is a shitty ass place sometimes and sometimes. And we want to try and change that, if only for a little while.
